Cold supply chain or cold chain is a common concept in developed countries. It may be interpreted as a supply chain capable of controlling and maintaining suitable temperatures to preserve goods with various temperature requirements, in order to extend shelf life of goods that are sensitive to high temperatures such as agricultural products, aquatic products, frozen-processed products, cut flowers and pharmaceutical products, especially vaccine.

Although the name change for Vietnam Freight Forwarders Association (VIFFAS) has been planned since 2007, only until January 04, 2013 after many “delays”, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the Decision (1) to change said name to Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA), which was regarded as the approval of relevant ministries and industries.

Why is the cost so high? According to Vietnam Freight Forwarders Association (VIFFAS), reasons for the high cost of Merchandise Transport (MT) in Vietnam are due to unhealthy competition of some businesses, poor and inadequate transport infrastructure, inconsistency of MT vehicles, and lack of standardized packaging regulations, etc.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES. Logistics was introduced into Vietnam about 20 years ago. Although income from logistics is still at a low level, accounting for about 2-4% of GDP per year (the remaining 80% lies in the hands of foreign multinational companies), the growth rate of logistics is relatively fast, reaching around 20-25% per year.

According to Article 233 of the Commercial Law: “Logistic services are commercial activities whereby traders organize the performance of one or many jobs including reception, transportation, warehousing, yard storage of cargoes, completion of customs procedures and other formalities and paperwork, provision of consultancy to customers, services of packaging, marking, delivery of goods, or other services related to goods according to agreements with customers in order to enjoy service charges.”
